5 Simple Ways to Support Reading at Home

You don't need to be a reading specialist to support your child's literacy development. Here are five simple, practical things you can do every day.

01

Read Together Every Day

Even 10 minutes of shared reading makes a huge difference. Let your child choose the books โ€” enjoyment is key. For younger children, point to the words as you read them.

02

Make It Multi-Sensory

Use magnetic letters, write in sand, or form letters with play dough. The more senses involved, the better the learning sticks.

03

Play Sound Games

I Spy using sounds (not letter names), rhyming games, and clapping syllables are all fantastic ways to build phonological awareness.

04

Label the World

Point out words everywhere โ€” on cereal boxes, street signs, menus. Help your child see that reading is a useful, real-world skill.

05

Be Patient and Positive

Praise effort, not just accuracy. If your child gets stuck on a word, give them time to try before jumping in. Celebrate the small wins!
