You don't need to be a reading specialist to support your child's literacy development. Here are five simple, practical things you can do every day.
Read Together Every Day
Even 10 minutes of shared reading makes a huge difference. Let your child choose the books โ enjoyment is key. For younger children, point to the words as you read them.
Make It Multi-Sensory
Use magnetic letters, write in sand, or form letters with play dough. The more senses involved, the better the learning sticks.
Play Sound Games
I Spy using sounds (not letter names), rhyming games, and clapping syllables are all fantastic ways to build phonological awareness.
Label the World
Point out words everywhere โ on cereal boxes, street signs, menus. Help your child see that reading is a useful, real-world skill.
Be Patient and Positive
Praise effort, not just accuracy. If your child gets stuck on a word, give them time to try before jumping in. Celebrate the small wins!
